Four days, eight teams, and $100,000 later, Stake Ranked Episode 3 delivered exactly the chaos a lopsided bracket promised. Barcelona hosted the double-elimination scrap from July 15 to 18, best-of-threes feeding into a best-of-five grand final, and by the time the dust settled it was a brand new HEROIC lifting the trophy and the $25,000 top prize!
The side we'd flagged in our preview as the tournament's most dangerous dark horse turned a "mystery box" reputation into silverware at the very first attempt, and it was a weekend of storylines colliding all over the place: a shock early exit for the pre-event favourite on paper, a fairytale run from the qualifier underdogs, and a debuting super-team that simply refused to drop a series when it counted. Here's how the whole thing unfolded in Barcelona.
HEROIC Keep It Clean In The Grand Final
The final of Stake Ranked Episode 3 was a masterclass in closing out. HEROIC took Nuke 13-9 behind a dominant showing on the attacking T-side, the half of the map where their squad plants the bomb rather than defends it, then survived a nervy Mirage where a 10-2 lead while defending on the CT side nearly evaporated before they steadied to win 13-11 and go two maps up. On Dust2, K27 raced to an 11-7 lead and smelled a reverse sweep, a comeback from two maps down to steal the series, only for HEROIC to rip off six unanswered rounds and seal a 13-11 win and a flawless 3-0 series, meaning K27 failed to take a single map off them. New signing MartinezSa, playing his first event alongside Brollan, saved his brightest showing for that final map, underlining exactly why the roster overhaul was worth the gamble.
Getting there was no cakewalk either. HEROIC edged 3DMAX in the opening round, downed Phantom in the upper semi-finals, and beat defending favourites Ninjas in Pyjamas (NiP) 2-1 in the upper final, the last stop in the winners' bracket, to book their spot in the grand final without ever dropping into the lower bracket themselves. For a lineup with zero official maps together beforehand, running the table like that was the performance of the tournament.

Upsets And Cinderellas Light Up The Bracket
The biggest bombshell landed on day one. paiN Gaming, the top-ranked team in the field and our own tip to win the whole thing, were upset 1-2 by open-qualifier Phantom Esports, then swept 0-2 by 3DMAX in the lower bracket to bow out in a stunning 7th. So much for our 3-0 final call, though we did at least get the scoreline right, just with the wrong team holding the trophy.
Phantom, the first-ever open-qualifier side to reach a Stake Ranked Finals, rode that upset all the way to a gutsy 5th. The real Cinderella run, though, belonged to K27. We'd filed them under the longest shots in the room and suggested backing them map by map rather than outright, and they responded by chainsawing through the lower bracket, knocking out Wildcard, Phantom, and 3DMAX before avenging an opening loss to NiP to reach the grand final. Their fairytale finally ran dry against HEROIC, but a 2nd-place finish for a stand-in-laden roster was some story. NiP, meanwhile, justified our decision to fade their title defence, fading to 3rd after that upper-final defeat, while our other dark-horse shout, Wildcard, disappointed in dead last.
